Mixed Treble for Mike.
Mike Goodfellow was back on board his Suzuki GSXR1000 K5 this weekend at Brands Hatch thanks to a support package put together by Simon Frendo of Carbontek at Whyteleafe and entrepreneur Steve Greenhalgh. Lack of finances has prevented Mike from racing for the past couple of years. Simon arranged to bring Steve to a trackday at Silverstone to show Mike's potential.
You will almost certainly know that it was a very wet weekend! Friday's test day was spent adjusting settings for the conditions which were exacerbated by the newly laid tarmac on the circuit which was extremely slippery.
Saturday morning was a little brighter and the track was damp for the first qualifying session. Mike set the fastest lap time of 53.46 seconds early on. For the second session the track was officially dry and his time improved to 49.67 seconds but he was beaten by 0.39 seconds for pole position. The handling of the bike was proving difficult; at Druids he was using his knee to push the bike back up off the track and was experiencing horrendous weaving from Clearways onto the start/finish straight.
The first of three races over the weekend was after lunch and it was raining. From position 2 Mike got a flying start into Paddock Hill and lead the whole 9 lap race, finishing 10.29 seconds ahead of Peter Woodall. His fastest lap was over a second quicker than anyone in the race.
On Sunday the weather continued to be unsettled, making tyre choice and settings challenging. Mike's second Powerbike race was immediately after the lunch break. Again starting from position 2 on the grid he lead from the lights for the first four laps, but an eventful race saw the lead change several times with Cappella crashing out on lap 11 and Mike eventually taking 3rd in class. In his final race of the day he made another quick get away from the grid and lead the pack from the start. He ran wide exiting Druids on the first lap and on the second lap slid off onto the mud, joining the many riders over the weekend whose races had finished in a similar fashion! Fortunately he and the bike escaped without any damage - just some soapy water needed.
Mike is extremely grateful to Simon and Steve for presenting this opportunity and for everyone who came to Brands Hatch to support him. The two Sunday races are being shown on Motors TV on Thursday 14th October at 9pm and repeated on Friday the 15th October at 2pm.
A deal is now being put together to get Mike back on the British Superstock grid for 2011.
