Glorious Goodfellow Race Weekend
Thanks to everyone for their generous support in getting Mikey racing on Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit this weekend.
Friday Testing was spent getting a good set up on the Dunlop NTECs from Dennis Trollope and the new spring that MCTechnics had supplied. A big thank you to Darren for being at the end of a phone with lots of advice.
Mikey had entered the Champion of Brands and was a late entry into the Powerbikes.
On Saturday he qualified 3rd for Champion of Brands with a personal fastest lap time of 1m 31s and was 5th in the Powerbikes. As he was a reserve entry he had to start the first Powerbike race at P42. On the first lap he passed 14 riders and after an exciting race, eventually finished 11th. He was certainly intent on getting a good result.
For the second race he was able to start from P5 and lead from Paddock Hill to the chequered flag. There was a great presentation evening in the Kentagon and it was good to see Mikey back on form.
Sunday, Mikey won another Powerbike race - he was never headed but 2nd and 3rd were challenging strongly. He was using worn tyres and to watch him come through Clearways was quite nerve wracking as the bike snaked past.
His final race of the season was the Champion of Brands, which he had previously won on a CBR600 bike in 2004. Starting from P3 on his Suzuki GSXR1000 he led from the start, pulling a 3 to 4 second lead which was never reduced by the 2nd place rider. He was consistently lapping in the 1.30s.
Mikey now joins an illustrious band of riders who have won this beautiful trophy twice, including Mike Hailwood and John Surtees!
Our sincere condolences to the Lightowler family on the tragic loss of their son, Ben.
